Which pay frequency (i.e. biweekly, bimonthly, monthly, weekly, etc.), do you prefer? Why?

|

Bimonthly is personally my favourite. You get paid a consistent amount every month (if you're salaried anyway), feels like you have more to play with each month, and overall it just works better with the way I budget. EDIT: By bimonthly I mean twice per month, semimonthly is technically correct

Also feels like come end of week you did something etc, now truthfully if one balances property makes no huge difference, but also feels that your not waiting forever for pay, it's bad in jobs you hate as entire way could feel like a massive drag.

I had a professional job that paid weekly and I really liked it over EOW because I felt like I kept track of my salary better. Like, if I was going to buy something that week, I could more easily think about my check and whether the purchase is worth it. 💯 Dollars is 10% of $1000 but 5% of $2000. Brain tricks and one less math step.

Daily. Had a job at a haunted corn maze\* where they'd pretty much take whoever showed up that day and would pay out at the end of the night. Was great! But yeah anything that's quicker is generally better. Definitely preferred weekly over every other week which has been the standard in most jobs I've worked.

Weekly because so many things could happen from week to week that waiting two weeks to get your money could be dangerous. I've had to take out small payday loans or at least heavily stress if I'd make it to the next paycheque because some stupid shit happens, but with a weekly paycheque I know I'll be fine by Monday.

I've been paid weekly, every two weeks, and twice month. I think I liked twice a month the most. Most of my bills are monthly, so I budgeted and scheduled payments based on the consistent days of the month I got paid. I'm currently being paid every 2 weeks, and this is technically better in terms of time value of money... But it's not like the current interest rate makes this matter at all. I might have liked weekly best of all of them, but the salary difference between the job that paid that way and the rest is so great it's probably biasing me against it.

I might be biased, since a giant part of my work history is payroll and the scheduling is such a god damn headache, but I much prefer biweekly. Consistent, you know the day you get paid, you know your pay period dates, you know what your OT is going to be, prorating is simple and fair, etc.. Weekly is similar, but it’s too easy to overspend.

Bi monthly isn’t a consistent amount, at least in my experience. A bi monthly period could be 10 working days, 11 working days, and the paycheck for the period would change accordingly. I find this pretty annoying for monthly budgeting actually. All the other pay frequencies would be consistent amounts each pay day, which I prefer so I know exactly what I get each pay day. I have only been on bi weekly schedules, so don’t know what it’s like for weekly or monthly

It's fine because my husband (also biweekly) and I get paid on different weeks so we still get a weekly check. Nerd Alert ⚠️ 📢 I like to play around with money and plan exactly what's going where. Have my spreadsheet, charts that I update prior to every payday. So having to wait 2 weeks or more between checks would suck.

When I was much poorer, biweekly was the sweet spot since the first check in the month was large enough to cover rent and a few other expenses and the second check was large enough to cover my other remaining bills with something left over. Now that I earn much more money, pay frequency is irrelevant to me. When you're finally paid sufficiently for your labor, you can count on having enough left over in your checking account after you've paid rent and your bills that you know you can make it through the remainder of the month without worry.

I can tell you getting paid monthly sucks. We have a weird schedule where they pay us “monthly” on a certain day of the week, but on or before a certain day of the month. Say for example we normally get paid the 4th Friday of each month, unless the 4th Friday that specific month is after the 28th, then we would get paid on the 3rd Friday that month. Generally this means there’s 4 weeks between checks. It’s easy enough to get used to, but I get my whole months pay one day… and then a week later I’ve burned through 85% of it paying bills…. Then for 2-3 weeks I’ve got a couple hundred dollars in my account, and sometimes by the last week I’m usually down to $20. What really sucks is there’s two times per year that we go FIVE WEEKS between checks… and if you don’t know what months those are ahead or try to maintain a minimum balance of a couple hundred dollars at all times then you’re hosed.

When I was hourly I liked being paid weekly. Because I was living at home and didn’t have bills due on a certain schedule. I was paid monthly at my last job and it was both great and awful. I was paid on the last day of the month and paid all my bills at one time. This was great because I always saved at this time too. But… I always felt like I was dragging to then end of the month and would get anxious if something happened before payday because I didn’t like removing money from my savings. So I would often overspend on my credit card in effort to not pull from savings and then just ending up pulling money out anyway. I am bi-weekly now and my partner is as well. And we got lucky because our pay is on opposite weeks so we can have bill money direct deposited and direct withdrawal with no issue. Long story short. I have found ways to adjust to each method of pay. Each has their pros and cons.

I prefer monthly. Yes, you get to watch your account balance drain throughout those 30 days. I made a game out of it, though: I would pay all bills on the first of the month, take out some cash (I was and am mostly card-based) then ignore the account until the next deposit hit. I'd balance the account about once per quarter and move all excess to savings. Note that I made pretty decent (for me, at least) money and was largely on the road, so meals and whatnot were expensed.

The covid-19 crisis was a big wake up call in respects to how unprepared Americans are for any sort of disruption in pay. I have a friend that immigrated here from Poland and he was only paid once a month and he liked it bc it forces good spending habits.

Back home it’s all monthly (there’s no difference between salary or hourly employees etc- all the same) and monthly works just fine. Everyone has auto deposits set up so that when salary comes in all bills get auto paid and then whatever is left is easy to budget. Bimonthly worked for me with a decent salary but i can imagine with a lower salary you are making bill payments twice a month as they can’t all be paid from that first payment etc so it seems to me its more work and harder to keep check of it all.

This is frequent enough to enjoy, but uncommon enough that I don't expect it. I used to be paid semimonthly with with a quarterly profit sharing bonus that ranged between 50 and 170% of my regular pay for the quarter. I budgeted for the 50% and really enjoyed the better quarters. Tax law withholding treatment of bonuses meant I also received a huge tax return which also felt nice.

I might just be weird but I have the option to get paid weekly and I pick my checks up monthly. Usually I pick it up mid month before my rent is due. But since I split rent with a roommate and alternate paying full rent, I sometimes pick it up once every 1.5 or 2 months in practice. I am terrible with money in that I don't know how to invest nor spend it so it makes little difference to me when I get paid. (Not that I have much to invest anyways.)

I've had all different types of pay frequency in the past. The one I actually preferred was the monthly payment. It was hard to get used to at first, but in the end I preferred it because it really forced me to budget my money. I'd pay all my bills as soon as I got paid, and then budget the rest of my money. It really makes you be more mindful on how you spend your money when you have a longer gap between paychecks.

I haven't done weekly so my vote is biweekly. It works out so much easier than trying to figure out if I get paid on a Monday or a Friday when the 16th lands on a weekend or something. I also feel like I have a better handle on my finances. I bet weekly would be great too.

Weekly is really good for me personally but I know it’s not good for some people who tend to impulse buy all the time. It helps me plan out my bills and save some money aside for different things. I also tend to spend less actually since I see less in my account.

Biweekly is best cause you get 26 cks, vs bimonthly is 24 cks. I used to get paid bimonthly & co then gave us one add'l "bonus" ck, so 25 cks total, but co was still screwing us out of 1 add'l ck for 2 weeks.

Definitely monthly. I find that twice a month is enough to get by but weirdly I spend more money this way too. Weekly is simply not enough, especially in case of unknown expenses. Monthly is the best for me because I can pay everything all at once without thinking about it, chuck some money into savings and spend the rest. I *never* end up spending all of it and I actually save the most money this way.

I’ve been paid weekly, biweekly, and monthly. I preferred weekly because if some small emergency happened I could take care of it then or at least plan around it. Getting paid monthly made me feel a little anxious even though I made lots of money, and that’s a long time to wait on pay for your work.

Weekly. I absolutely hate budgeting for every two weeks. Most bills won't allow me to move the pay cycle, so I ALWAYS have feast/famine situation where the first two weeks of the month I have to hold $200+ over from last paycheck to cover with nothing left over.

I've been paid bimonthly and biweekly. Currently biweekly and I will say I do miss bimonthly pay and knowing what dates your pay comes in. Biweekly does take a bit more juggling to make sure you have enough when you bills need to be paid. If you have a good budget however, then you don't really need to worry.

It seems to be a strange question in Spain as we are paid monthly. I think that is the only legal way. One thing that could be curious for you, is that we use to get paid 14 times per year, because at June and December we are double paid (a way to make people spend their money in summer holidays and Cristmas)

At my previous job, I was paid semi-monthly due to being a salaried employee. I got my check the 15th and 30th (or 28th/29th/31st) of each month. The amount was always the same. It was nice knowing exactly which days I would get my checks and which bills I could pay. With biweekly, it wasn’t all bad, but I didn’t like the inconsistency of it all sometimes when it came to dates I would be paid.

I was paid monthly when I lived in Japan and once I got into a routine, I actually loved it. It was so easy to budget. After all my bills were paid and I put some cash into savings, everything else was mine for the rest of the month. Did it sometimes get tight at the end of the month? Yes, but rarely, and it was usually voluntary - I could have dipped into my savings if I really wanted to. Always the 30th of every month (or last day of Feb). I get paid biweekly here in the US. I hate having to balance my bills on two different paychecks, and I hate that they don't come on the same date each month. Sometimes my second paycheck doesn't come until a day or two after the due date on some of my bills, whose due dates *don't* change, so I'm charged a late fee, even though I'm paying on a consistent schedule. However... since I budget based on 2 paychecks a month, I get the occasional 3rd paycheck, so it sometimes feels like a "bonus". I can't imagine getting paid weekly. I'd be lost trying to manage which week's paycheck goes where. I think I'd be constantly waiting for the next one to roll in.

I prefer weekly. I would rather have the funds on hand immediately in case I needed to pay off a credit card debt or debit card overdraft, instead of having to wait for another week. Not that I run into these problems, but if I ever did I would like the option to correct them as fast as possible instead of running up a debt waiting to get paid.

I like monthly pretty okay, mostly just because I autopay most bills that come out at the first of the month and it's nice to just do it all in one fell swoop without the temptation to blow my first check. However, the only annoying thing is that utilities come out near the end of the month. I'm a planner and I always leave a cushion, so it's no big deal, but oof sometimes you just never know in Texas.

Weekly bar none. I always have a month's buffer of money to pay bills in my checking account, so technically, my pay frequency doesn't matter, but there is a dopamine release getting my direct deposit every week. At my last job, we got paid semi-monthly, bi-weekly? I don't know, it was some weird shit where we got paid the 10th and 25th of every month. I'd get a check on a Tuesday, then a Saturday the next time.
